Northern Saw-Whet Owl Banding

Students participating in the CCHS Envirothon program attended the Penn State Dubois Northern Saw-whet owl banding station. This station sets up every fall to capture these owls for research. The owls are captured in Mist nets as they fly by. once captured they are then processed which consists of determining age, weight, sex, and other measurements. A small metal band is then placed on the leg of the owl and it is released back into the wild. There is no guarantee that an owl will be captured however this group was fortunate enough to witness 3 owls get processed. Such an amazing experience got these students with such a beautiful bird. Thank you to Penn State Dubois for allowing us to attend!
